Virtual Machine Guides

If you're not familiar with the concept of a virtual machine, think of it as a program that pretends to be a "computer within your computer". This allows you to run real operating systems as if they were elaborate programs, which is a really cool innovation!

However, getting the most out of a virtual machine requires some technical know-how, as they're more complicated than your standard program. They are also more demanding than the average program, so you'll need a strong computer to be able to work with virtual machines.

The guides I've prepared here attempt to simplify things as much as possible while giving you the tools you need to install, run, and make use of some virtual machines. They also typically assume you're using VirtualBox to manage your virtual machines, as this is a free and very easy virtual machine manager.

Getting Started

Virtual Machine 101

While you might be able to figure things out just by fumbling around, it will be a lot easier to use a virtual machine if you know what you're working with. This guide covers most of the important details, like common terms or legal issues you may encounter while playing around with different operating systems.

Introducing Virtualbox

In my opinion, Oracle's VirtualBox is one of the simplest virtual machine management tools out there, so I've prepared this guide that will show you how to get yourself a copy and create your first virtual machine.

Creating Virtual Machines

Installing Linux on Virtualbox

Linux is a powerful and free operating system, which makes it perfect for installing in a virtual machine. Aside from Linux-only games, you can also use this virtual machine to run some retro Windows games!

Installing FreeDOS on Virtualbox

FreeDOS is a modern DOS operating system, making it one way for people to play their favorite DOS games. Note that there are a few drawbacks to running FreeDOS in VirtualBox, so you may want to just use DosBox instead.
