Glossary Entry: Platformer

Definition

Platformers are a genre of video game where the core mechanic revolves around the player character jumping from place to place. These locations are often platforms just hanging in the air, hence the name.

Easily the most recognizable platformer in history is the original Super Mario Brothers on the NES, as it's the game that defined the genre.

There are also many subgenres of platformers, based around the secondary mechanics the game uses, such as platform shooters and puzzle platformers.
