Glossary Entry: Nintendo Entertainment System

Definition

The NES, or Nintendo Entertainment System as it is more properly known, was an extremely influential game console released in the mid-1980s.

Aside from being the retro gaming system of choice, it's also where many of today's major franchises - including such names as Super Mario, Final Fantasy, Metroid, and the Legend of Zelda - got their start.

Today, many NES games have been made available again via Nintendo's Nintendo Online service and many third party collections.
