Glossary Entry: Native

Definition

In computing terms, a program is "native" to the operating system it was designed for. Native programs nearly always outperform software that was ported or made to work through emulation, and they also tend to be the programs that the average person will use on a given operating system.

As an example, Microsoft's Edge web browser is "native" to the Windows operating system, and therefore not native to Linux or any other operating system.
