Glossary Entry: Virtual Reality

Definition

Virtual reality is a new way for users to interact with digital environments (usually interactive games). By wearing special headsets and holding handheld controllers, the user places themselves within the virtual world.

One way to look at this form of entertainment is to picture yourself as the controller and camera: the position of your head controls the orientation of the camera, and you'll need to physically move about in order to perform actions in the virtual world.

Fortunately, walking about is usually handled via a small analog stick on one of the controllers, so you don't need to actually walk and jump around the room in order to move in the virtual world.
