Glossary Entry: Exploit

Quick Definition

In gaming, an exploit is a bug or unintended feature that players can deliberately trigger to alter the game in their favor. This may include item duplication, sequence breaking, or even render the player effectively invincible.

However, this term is also used when talking about computer software in general. In this case, an exploit is a bug or unintended feature that allows someone to bypass security features and run whatever software they want on the compromised system. This sort of exploit is how hackers break restrictions, steal personal information, or cause other sorts of trouble.

Developers usually release patches to defend against exploits, and this is why it's so important to keep things like your browser or operating system updated.
