Glossary Entry: Clone Game
Definition
A clone game is a video game that heavily mimics the look, feel, and mechanics of another, much more popular game. Often, clone games aren't as well made as the original, effectively making them feel like store brand copycats instead of a decent product in their own right.
However, when a game is cloned enough times and the clones add enough unique material to make them stand apart from the original, a new genre may be born. For example, First Person Shooters were known as "Doom Clones" at one time.
