Glossary Entry: Sandbox game
Definition
Unlike most video games, which offer a specific plot and goals to achieve, Sandbox games provide a world for players to explore on their own terms, effectively creating a virtual "sandbox" for people to play in.
The biggest drawback to this type of game design is that players are limited primarily by their own imagination - a lot of people simply run out of ideas after a while.
