This stands for "Player VS Environment".
In online multiplayer games, servers can be marked as PVP or PVE. On PVE servers, players cannot attack one another. Since the only danger is from the computer-controlled enemies and environmental hazards, this sort of server encourages players to work together and resolve problems without resorting to violence.
Often, PVE is the default setting, as PVP gameplay must be explicitly enabled.
