Glossary Entry: Pay to Play

Quick Definition

Slang for a game that requires a subscription fee. At first this might sound like a bad thing (after all, if you bought a game, shouldn't you own your copy?), but games that are played online (such as MMOs*) require the developers to maintain their own set of hardware and utilities. The subscription fee thus provides the income to pay for the game's upkeep.
