In games featuring combat, a critical hit is an unusually powerful attack. The basic idea is that the attack hit something important (ie, critical) to the survival of the target.
In RPGs, players typically have limited influence on whether or not an attack will become a critical hit, but this is not the case in First Person Shooters or Third Person Shooters, where the player can cause a critical hit by shooting their target in a vulnerable spot, such as the head.
