Quick Definition

A screen or window's resolution refers to the screen or windows width and height, in pixels. Higher resolutions are wider and taller, and thus can show more detail. However, the larger the resolution, the more effort the computer must take to produce the image. Thus one must find a balance between detail and performance when setting a game's resolution.
