Glossary Entry: 16-bit executable

Quick Definition

While executables are always unique to a specific operating system or family of operating systems, a 16-bit executable is designed specifically for a 16-bit system.

This is an obsolete type of executable, as 32-bit became a standard in the late 1990s. These old programs generally require an emulator to run on newer systems.
